Computational Investigation on Cracking Behaviors of AerMet 100

AerMet 100 exhibits excellent mechanical properties, proven in previous studies; however, defects may greatly influence the behavior during service of material, which serves as one major challenges wider application material. To quantify crack evolution process, in-plane type I propagation is comprehensively investigated based on extended finite element method (XFEM). The growth characterized terms extracted angle, stress intensity factor (SIF) tip, and field profiles process. An extrapolation adopted to calculate SIF, followed by a series parametric studies governing factors, i.e., initial length, location, number through numerical investigation. It found that angle enlarges monotonously with increase number, increases slowly rapidly reverse at about 45°. SIF Mode I, KId, gradually decreases location nearly keeps steady when length varies. Results provide further understanding failure fracture guide future design structures.
